Things to do and see

Aberford

Approximately halfway between Leeds and York, Aberford is a historic village with roots stretching back to the Roman era.  Originally a coaching stop between London and Edinburgh on the Great North Road, the village has evolved into the conservation area it is today.

We have a village pub, a children’s playground and a larger recreation area with outdoor table tennis, basketball court, outdoor exercise equipment, an (almost full-sized) tennis court and a playing field.

For food shopping, the Post Office in the neighbouring village of Barwick stocks basic essentials as well as freshly baked croissants.  For a bigger shop, Sainsbury’s, Tesco’s, Morrison’s, Marks & Spencer, Lidl and Aldi are all about a 10 minute drive away.

Our lovely village offers a unique blend of heritage architecture and scenic walking trails. Here’s some things to do and see:

  • Marvel at the gothic architecture of the Gascogne Almshouses.
  • Visit Britain’s only St Ricarius Church – a listed building with a Norman Tower.
  • Stroll along the old “Fly Line” railway and discover Nellie’s Tree – voted UK’s Tree of the Year in 2018.
  • Take a scenic walk to The Triumphal Arch – Aberford’s own Arc de Triomphe!
  • Enjoy a drink at our village pub, the uniquely named Arabian Horse Pub.
  • Visit the nearby Edwardian Lotherton Hall and explore the landscaped gardens and the zoo, home to penguins and flamingos.
  • Follow walking trails through beautiful scenery and countryside, including a walk through the woods to Hazlewood Castle Hotel where you can reward yourself with an afternoon tea or take part in the outdoor activities on offer such as quadbiking or archery. For children, there is an adventure trail, the Secret Forest, a magical world of bogglins and fairies, knights and dragons.
  • Treat yourself to tea and cake at our Village Community Cafe, opened on Fridays (closed for the summer holidays).
  • Browse through a wide range of furniture and accessories at Aberford Interiors and afterwards, relax in the tearoom with a cup of coffee and homemade cake. During the summer months, enjoy outdoor seating in the beautiful garden.

You will find details of walking and cycling routes in the cottage.
